EDITORS COMMENTS
Step back in time with this evocative photograph of the Stonehouse Hotel in Hatfield, Hertfordshire, as it looked in the 1940s. The image captures the right facade of the pub, with its distinctive red brick exterior and white-painted windows. At the time, the Stonehouse Hotel was under the ownership of the Charrington and Company Limited. This photograph holds a rich historical significance, as the back of the print reveals that it was taken in 1942. Tragically, the Stonehouse Hotel no longer exists, having been demolished in July 2018 to make way for the Hatfield Tunnel and the Galleria Shopping Centre. The exact site of the pub is now the car park for the shopping centre, located near Macdonalds. The road where the pub once stood is now called the Comet Way A1001, having previously been known as the Barnet By Pass. The Stonehouse Hotel was a beloved local establishment, and its loss is deeply felt by the community. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the past, offering a glimpse into a bygone era. The image invites us to imagine the lively conversations and laughter that once filled the pub's cozy interior, and to reflect on the ever-changing landscape of Hatfield and Hertfordshire.
