EDITORS COMMENTS
"This evocative photograph captures the corner view of the Railway Tavern, a cherished pub located in the heart of Stratford Market, London, in the 1930s. The image, taken in 1931, showcases the classic design of the building with its ornate brickwork and distinctive signage. The pub was a proud part of the Charrington and Company Limited estate, a prominent brewery in London at the time. The back of the print reveals a fascinating trading record for the Railway Tavern, detailing its operation from 1924 to 1961. The pub had a rich history, having been damaged and closed due to enemy action on the 8th of December 1940. However, it was successfully reopened by the 27th of November 1942. Unfortunately, the Railway Tavern's story did not end there. At some point in the 1970s, the pub closed its doors and was transformed into Reflections Nightclub. The nightclub operated until 2005, but as of July 2018, the premises stood empty. The Railway Tavern, once a beloved watering hole for the local community, now waits for a new chapter in its history to begin." This photograph offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time when the Railway Tavern was a thriving pub in the vibrant Stratford Market area of London. The image serves as a poignant reminder of the history and character that can be found in our local pubs and the stories they hold.
