This evocative photograph captures the Hare & Hounds Public House in Hampstead, London, as it stood in the 1940s. The image on the left showcases the pub's facade, with its distinctive sign and ornate detailing. The Hare & Hounds, a beloved local institution, was located at NW3 7HE in Hampstead. Sadly, the history of this pub is intertwined with the turbulent events of World War II. The photograph on the reverse of the print reveals that the pub was bombed on two separate occasions. The first bombing occurred on October 2, 1940, partially damaging the building. However, the pub did not fully succumb to destruction until October 16, 1940, when it was entirely demolished by another bomb. Despite the tragic loss of this historic pub, the photograph serves as a poignant reminder of its existence and the role it played in the community of Hampstead during the 1940s. The Hare & Hounds, a cherished local watering hole, was more than just a pub – it was a gathering place, a source of comfort, and a symbol of resilience in the face of adversity.
