EDITORS COMMENTS
Mrs. Gerard D. Erlanger, also known as Edyth Baker (1899-1971), was an American boogie-woogie pianist and a captivating figure in the jazz and society circles of the 1930s. In this striking portrait, taken in 1933, Edyth exudes an aura of elegance and sophistication, her blonde curls cascading down her shoulders, her piercing blue eyes gazing intently at an unseen audience. Born Edyth A. Baker, she married Gerard ("Pop") Erlanger, a well-known New York City nightclub owner and impresario, in 1928. Her musical career took off in the late 1920s and early 1930s, with performances at some of the most famous jazz clubs in New York City, including the Cotton Club and the Famous Door. Edyth's unique style of playing boogie-woogie piano, a rhythmic and energetic genre that originated in the African-American communities of the South, quickly gained her a loyal following. Her performances were marked by their raw energy, technical skill, and infectious enthusiasm. Despite her success as a musician, Edyth was also a popular figure in high society, often appearing at glamorous events and rubbing shoulders with the rich and famous. This portrait captures her in a rare moment of stillness and introspection, a reminder of the complex and multifaceted life of this remarkable woman.
