EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcoloured lithograph depicts Marie Jeanne de Valois-Anjou, better known as Marie-Josèphe de Savoie or Marie Joséphine of Anjou (1404-1463), the queen consort of King Charles VII of France. The portrait, created by Leopold Massard after an original painting in Roger de Gaignières portfolio VI 15 from the Historical Costumes of France, published by the Administration de Librairie in Paris in 1852, showcases Marie Joséphine's regal elegance and refined beauty. Marie Joséphine was born into the noble House of Anjou and was the granddaughter of King René of Naples and Marie de Blois, Queen of Sicily. She was married to King Charles VII of France in 1420, making her the queen consort of France at the young age of seventeen. Her marriage was a strategic alliance aimed at strengthening the ties between the Kingdom of Naples and the French monarchy. In this portrait, Marie Joséphine is depicted wearing the royal ermine fur robe, a symbol of royalty and purity, which is draped over her shoulders and secured with a golden brooch. The intricate details of her headdress, adorned with pearls and precious stones, add to her regal appearance. The delicate handcolouring of the lithograph further enhances the beauty and sophistication of the portrait, making it a stunning representation of the queen's opulence and grace. Marie Joséphine's reign as queen consort of France was marked by political intrigue and power struggles, as she navigated the complexities of the French court and the ongoing Hundred Years' War. Despite these challenges, she remained a devoted wife and mother, and her legacy as a powerful and influential queen continues to be celebrated in French history.
