EDITORS COMMENTS
Maria Anna Victoria of Bavaria, also known as Marie Anne Christine Victoire de Baviere, was born on October 24, 1660, in Munich, Bavaria. She was the eldest surviving daughter of Ferdinand Maria, Elector of Bavaria, and Henriette Adelaide of Savoy. In 1678, at the age of 18, Maria Anna Victoria was married to Louis, le Grand Dauphin of France, the eldest son of King Louis XIV and Marie-Thérèse of Austria. The marriage was a strategic alliance between France and Bavaria, aimed at strengthening the power of the French monarchy and securing the succession. This stunning handcoloured lithograph, created in 1852 by Bibliophile Jacob under the direction of Paul Lacroix, depicts Maria Anna Victoria in the elegant attire of the late 17th century. She is shown wearing a voluminous dress with a low-cut bodice, adorned with intricate lace and embroidery. Her hair is styled in elaborate curls, framing her face and accentuating her elegant features. The Dauphine of France is depicted with a serene expression, conveying the grace and sophistication expected of a queen consort. Maria Anna Victoria's marriage to Louis, le Grand Dauphin, was not a happy one. The couple had no children, and Louis was known to have had numerous mistresses. Despite this, Maria Anna Victoria remained loyal to her husband until his death in 1711. She continued to serve as a prominent figure at the French court until her own death in 1694. This beautiful lithograph is a testament to the beauty and elegance of Maria Anna Victoria of Bavaria, a queen consort whose life was marked by political alliances and personal sacrifices. It is a reminder of the opulence and grandeur of the French court during the reign of Louis XIV and the role that women played in the complex web of European politics.
