EDITORS COMMENTS
Louise Labe, also known as La Belle Cordière, was a remarkable French poet and writer of the 16th century. Born in 1526, she was not only a poet but also an accomplished musician, equestrian, archer, and fencer. Her multifaceted talents were not limited to the arts, as she was also a proficient linguist, fluent in both French and Latin. This stunning handcoloured lithograph is a portrait of Louise Labe, captured in her prime. The image, taken from Roger de Gaignières' portfolio VIII 82 in Le Bibliophile Jacob's Costumes Historiques de la France, provides a glimpse into the elegance and refinement of the Renaissance period. The portrait shows Louise in a flowing gown, adorned with intricate patterns and rich fabrics, accessorized with a jeweled necklace and a delicate lace veil. Her expression is one of quiet confidence and intelligence, reflecting the depth of her literary and artistic achievements. Louise's personal life was marked by tragedy. She was married to Ennemond Perrin, a wealthy merchant from Lyon, but their union was short-lived. Ennemond died in 1552, leaving Louise with three young children to raise on her own. Despite the challenges she faced, she continued to write and publish her poetry, which was well-received by the literary elite of the time. Louise Labe's legacy as a poet and writer endures to this day. Her works, which include sonnets, ballads, and epistles, continue to be studied and admired for their beauty, depth, and insight into the human condition. This portrait serves as a reminder of her remarkable accomplishments and the enduring power of the written word.
