EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored copperplate engraving depicts the medicinal plant Licorice, or Glycyrrhiza glabra, as it was illustrated in Dr. Willibald Artus's comprehensive Handbook of all Medical-Pharmaceutical Plants, published in Jena, Germany, in 1876. The botanical name, Glycyrrhiza glabra, is inscribed at the bottom left corner of the image, while the common names, licorice and liquorice, are written at the top. The plant is shown in its natural state, with long, slender stalks bearing large, oval leaves and clusters of small, pink-purple flowers. The root system, which is the part of the plant most commonly used for medicinal purposes, is also shown, with its fibrous and knotted structure prominently displayed. Licorice, a native to Europe, Asia, and the Mediterranean, has a long history of use in traditional medicine. The sweet taste of licorice comes from glycyrrhizin, a natural sweetener that is 50 times sweeter than sugar. The plant was valued for its soothing properties, particularly for the relief of sore throats, coughs, and digestive issues. In traditional Chinese medicine, licorice root has been used for over 2,000 years to treat a variety of conditions, including hepatitis, gastric ulcers, and respiratory problems. The intricate details of the engraving reveal the meticulous care and attention given to the creation of this botanical illustration. The use of hand-coloring adds an additional layer of beauty and depth to the image, making it a valuable addition to any collection of historical botanical prints.
