EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored stipple engraving depicts Leatherleaf, Chamaedaphne calyculata, also known as Andromeda calyculata. The intricately detailed illustration was created by the skilled hand of Mlle. Brenet, based on an original drawing by the renowned botanical artist Pierre-Joseph Redoute. The engraving is taken from Henri Louis Duhamel du Monceau's comprehensive work, "Traité des Arbres et Arbustes," published in Paris between 1804 and 1819. Leatherleaf is a low-growing shrub native to the eastern United States and eastern Canada. Its evergreen leaves are leathery in texture, as suggested by its common name, and range in color from dark green to bronze in the fall. The plant produces small, white, bell-shaped flowers in late spring, which give way to red berries in the summer. The meticulous process of creating this engraving involved the use of a fine point tool to apply tiny dots of ink to the surface of a copper plate. The plate was then inked and pressed onto paper, transferring the image in intricate detail. The addition of hand-coloring further enhanced the beauty of the engraving, bringing the vibrant hues of the Leatherleaf to life. This stunning work of art is a testament to the dedication and expertise of the botanical illustrators and engravers of the past, who meticulously documented the natural world for future generations to appreciate and learn from.
