EDITORS COMMENTS
In this 19th century handcoloured lithograph by the Gihaut brothers, we are transported back in time to a parlor adorned with elegant furnishings and ornate decor. The room is filled with the soft glow of natural light filtering through the curtains, casting a warm and inviting ambiance. In the foreground, a refined lady in fashionable attire sits comfortably on a plush settee, her expressive face revealing a mixture of concern and disdain. Across from her, an old gentleman, dressed as a dandy, leans forward in his chair, his eyes fixed intently on the lady. The scene is one of flattery and insincerity, as the old man attempts to persuade the lady that his meager income of 6,000 francs is sufficient for his needs. The lady, however, is unconvinced, her thoughts betraying her words as she silently labels him an old miser. The artist, Jean Gabriel Scheffer, masterfully captures the subtle nuances of human emotion and social interaction in this delightful vignette from Petites Scenes du Monde, published by Gihaut Freres in Paris in 1829. The beauty and fashion of the time period are on full display, as are the underlying comedic elements of human nature that continue to resonate with us today. This print invites us to ponder the complexities of life and the intricacies of human relationships in the 19th century.
