EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the interior of the Sardinian Chapel of Lincoln's Inn, London, as it appeared in 1893, just a few short decades before its unfortunate demise. The chapel, a cherished piece of Roman Catholic history in the heart of the city, was situated within the historic Lincoln's Inn complex, a professional association for lawyers and judges. The chapel, dedicated to Saint Jerome and the Blessed Virgin Mary, was a popular destination for both the legal community and the local Roman Catholic population. The image reveals an intimate and ornate space, with intricately carved wooden panels adorning the walls and ceiling, and a beautifully crafted altar taking center stage. The altar, richly decorated with gold leaf and intricate detailing, stands as a testament to the craftsmanship and devotion of the time. The altar's central feature is a striking statue of the Virgin Mary, her hands cradling the infant Jesus, surrounded by angels and saints. Unfortunately, the Sardinian Chapel did not survive the 20th century. It was demolished in the early 1930s to make way for the new Kingsway thoroughfare, a major roadway that was part of a larger urban development project. The loss of the chapel was deeply felt by the community, and efforts were made to preserve its memory and legacy. Today, a new church stands in its place, facing Kingsway, but the memory of the Sardinian Chapel and its beautiful interior continue to live on through photographs like this one.
