EDITORS COMMENTS
In this image from the "Il Costume Antico e Moderno" series by Giulio Ferrario, we witness the initiation ceremony of young disciples, or "gabr," in ancient Zoroastrianism, a monotheistic religion originating in Persia around 1500 BCE. The ceremony, depicted here, was believed to confer spiritual protection and purity upon the initiates. The scene unfolds with a priest performing the rituals, pouring water into a baby's mouth and washing another child. The priest also holds a third child over a pyre, symbolizing the purifying power of fire. This initiation was considered a crucial step in the spiritual and social development of the young Zoroastrian, preparing them for a life dedicated to the worship of Ahura Mazda, the supreme deity. Beside the initiation scene, a bride and groom are shown kneeling on a bed, surrounded by rice, symbolizing fertility and abundance. A musician plays a lute, adding a melodic backdrop to the nuptials. The combination of the initiation and wedding ceremonies in this illustration highlights the importance of spiritual growth and the continuation of the community in ancient Zoroastrian society. This hand-colored copperplate engraving, created by Giovanni Antonio Sasso in 1847, offers a unique glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of ancient Persia and the practices of its people, including the initiation ceremonies of the Zoroastrian disciples.
