EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely hand-colored steel engraving depicts the Indian berry, scientifically known as Anamirta cocculus, also referred to as the fish berry or Levant nut. The illustration is based on a botanical drawing by Edouard Maubert and was engraved by Lebrun for the esteemed French botanical publication, "La Regne Vegetal: Flore Medicale," published by Pierre Oscar Reveil, A. Dupuis, Fr. Gerard, and Francois Herincqs between 1864 and 1871. The Indian berry is a small, evergreen tree native to India, Sri Lanka, and Southeast Asia. The tree bears small, round, and red or yellow berries that contain several seeds. The seeds, which resemble nuts, are encased in a hard, woody shell. The Indian berry has been used in traditional Ayurvedic and Unani medicine for centuries due to its medicinal properties. The seeds contain a potent alkaloid called picrotoxin, which is a powerful muscle relaxant and a potent poison. The Indian berry was also known as "Coque du Levant" in France, and its seeds were used as a fish poison. The seeds were crushed and added to the water used to stun fish, making them easier to catch. The seeds were also used as a pesticide to control insects in rice fields. The intricate detail and vibrant colors in this engraving highlight the beauty and intrigue of the Indian berry, showcasing its significance in both medicinal and cultural contexts. The botanical illustration and engraving process were essential tools in the documentation and dissemination of scientific knowledge during the 19th century, allowing for a more comprehensive understanding of the natural world.
