EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the enigmatic figure of Sigmund Neuberger, better known as The Great Lafayette, in his study at 55 Tavistock Square, London, in 1911. The room is a rich tapestry of color and texture, with walls adorned with an eclectic array of pictures and ornaments. The illusionist's beloved dogs, Beauty and an unnamed canine companion, lounge comfortably on a plush sofa in the center of the room, their soft forms a striking contrast to the hard edges of the furniture and the intricate patterns of the Persian rug. The Great Lafayette, a master of illusion and magic, was known for his daring feats and captivating performances. His study, filled with the trappings of his art and the comforts of home, offers a glimpse into the life of this extraordinary man. The warm glow of the lamplight casts an intimate and inviting light over the scene, revealing the personal side of a man who captivated audiences with his magical abilities. Tragically, The Great Lafayette's life was cut short when he died in a fire at the Edinburgh Empire Music Hall on May 9, 1911. This photograph, taken just a year before his untimely death, serves as a poignant reminder of a man who lived a life full of wonder and enchantment, both on and off the stage.
