EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts a scene of elegant gentleman fencers engaged in a spirited bout, executing the Prime parade and Seconde thrust techniques. The Prime parade, derived from the broadsword, represents the initial defensive stance where the fencer raises the weapon to protect against incoming attacks. The St. George Guard parry, specifically the prime, is demonstrated here, with the fencer's right hand and forearm forming a shield to deflect an outside attack. The Seconde thrust, shown on the left side of the image, is a counterattack executed from the Prime parade. In this technique, the fencer thrusts the sword under the opponent's wrist, exploiting an opening created during their attack. The outside thrust is a common target for the Seconde, as it leaves the opponent's wrist vulnerable. Thomas Rowlandson, a renowned English artist, created this illustration for Domenico Angelo's "The School of Fencing," published in London in 1787. Angelo, an Italian fencing master, was a prominent figure in the world of European swordplay and dueling. This copperplate engraving is a testament to the refined art of fencing during the late 18th century, showcasing the grace, skill, and strategy involved in this ancient martial art.
