EDITORS COMMENTS
Beb el Fath, or The Gate of Cairo, is depicted in this stunning 19th-century illustration by Ali Bey el Abbassi from his "Travels in Morocco, Tripoli, Cyprus, Egypt, Arabia, Syria and Turkey." The engraving, created by Dell Acqua and hand-colored by Lazaretti, is part of Giovanni Battista Sonzogno's "Collection of the Most Interesting Voyages (Raccolta de Viaggi Piu Interessanti)" published in Milan between 1815 and 1817. Beb el Fath is a historic gate located in the northern part of the Bab el-Qasr complex in Old Cairo, Egypt. It is one of the few surviving gates of the original city walls of Cairo, which were built during the Fatimid period in the 10th century. The gate is named after Sultan Fath Ali Shah of Persia, who conquered Egypt in 1772 and passed through this gate during his triumphal entry into the city. The illustration captures the grandeur and intricacy of the gate, with its arched entrance adorned with intricate geometric patterns and calligraphy. The gate is surrounded by a bustling scene of activity, with people and animals milling about in the foreground, and the city of Cairo stretching out beyond. The use of vibrant colors in the hand-coloring adds depth and texture to the image, making it a captivating representation of life in Egypt during the early 19th century.
