EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured lithograph showcases five exotic weevil species, meticulously depicted in John O. Westwood's new edition of Dru Drury's Illustrations of Exotic Entomology, published by Bohn, London, in 1837. The first and second weevils are identified as Hadroplontus litura, also known as stem-boring weevils. These insects are characterized by their elongated snouts and slender bodies, which enable them to bore into plant stems. The third weevil is identified as Curculio longipes, a species with a distinctive long rostrum and a more robust body than the previous two. The fourth and fifth weevils are Calandra serrirostris and Phyllobius oblongus, respectively. The male Calandra weevil is shown with a long, curved rostrum and a relatively flat body, while the Phyllobius weevil displays a more rounded body and a shorter rostrum. This intricately detailed illustration provides a glimpse into the rich biodiversity of the weevil family (Coleoptera) during the 19th century. The handcoloured lithograph technique adds an extra layer of beauty and accuracy to the representation of these exotic insects. The illustration is a testament to the meticulous work of John O. Westwood and the importance of documenting the natural world during this period of scientific discovery.
