EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely hand-colored copperplate engraving depicts the European or Common Sturgeon, Acipenser sturio, a critically endangered species of fish. The European sturgeon is one of the largest and oldest living fish species, with some individuals reaching up to 2.5 meters in length and over 600 kg in weight. Historically, they were found in the Atlantic Ocean and the European and Asian rivers that flow into it, including the North Sea, the Baltic Sea, the Black Sea, and the Caspian Sea. The European sturgeon is easily recognizable by its elongated, eel-like body, covered in large, overlapping, diamond-shaped plates, and five barbels on the underside of its snout. They are also known for their distinctive, humpbacked appearance when they are fully grown. This illustration, drawn and engraved by Edward Donovan for his "Natural History of British Fishes," published by Donovan and F.C. and J. Rivington in London between 1802 and 1808, showcases the European sturgeon's intricate details and beauty. The hand-coloring adds depth and vibrancy to the image, making it a stunning representation of this magnificent fish. The European sturgeon population has drastically declined due to overfishing, habitat destruction, and pollution. They are particularly valued for their caviar, which is considered a delicacy in many parts of the world. As a result, they are now critically endangered, with populations in some areas facing extinction. Conservation efforts are underway to protect and restore their populations, including the implementation of fishing regulations and habitat restoration projects. This illustration serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving the natural world and the unique species that inhabit it. The European sturgeon's story is a testament to the power of science and art to document and raise awareness about the natural world and the threats it faces.
