EDITORS COMMENTS
This image is taken from Curtis's British Entomology, a seminal work in the field of entomology published between 1824 and 1839. Plate 366, featuring Coleoptera or beetles, specifically the species Adimonia 4-maculata, now known as Phyllobrotica quadrimaculata, is depicted in intricate detail. The orange-and-black Galeruca beetle is shown gracefully perched atop the leaves of Allium ursinum, commonly known as ramsons or wild garlic. John Curtis, FLS, the esteemed author and illustrator of this work, meticulously documented and illustrated various insect species found in Britain during the 1820s and 1830s. This plate, along with the others in the series, showcases the exquisite beauty and diversity of the insect world. The beetle, with its striking orange and black coloration, is a member of the family Ledipteridae, commonly known as the blister beetles. The small white spots on the beetle's elytra (wing cases) are a distinctive feature of this species. The plant, Allium ursinum, is a native European plant with distinctive broad, flat leaves and umbels of small white flowers. This photograph is a testament to the rich natural history heritage of the 19th century and the importance of documenting the natural world for future generations. The intricate details of the beetle and the plant are preserved in this beautiful image, providing a glimpse into the past and a reminder of the delicate balance of nature that continues to inspire and captivate us today.
