EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured steel engraving depicts the Common Otter, Lutra lutra (previously known as Lutra vulgaris), a highly adaptable and agile mammal native to Europe, Asia, and North Africa. The image is taken from Sir William Jardine's Naturalist's Library, published in Edinburgh in 1836. The illustration was created by James Stewart and engraved by Lizars. The Common Otter is characterized by its sleek, streamlined body, webbed hind feet, and distinctive flat, broad head. Its fur is typically brownish-black on the back and lighter beneath, with a white patch on the throat and chest. Otters are excellent swimmers, able to hold their breath for up to eight minutes and dive to depths of up to 10 meters in search of food. Their diet consists mainly of fish, crustaceans, and mollusks, which they locate using their sensitive whiskers and keen sense of smell. The Common Otter is an important species in many ecosystems, playing a crucial role in controlling populations of certain fish species and helping to maintain a healthy balance in aquatic environments. Unfortunately, their populations have declined significantly in some areas due to habitat loss, pollution, and persecution. Today, conservation efforts are underway to protect and preserve the Common Otter and its habitats, ensuring that future generations can continue to enjoy the beauty and importance of this remarkable creature.
