EDITORS COMMENTS
Title: "The Grand Old Men on Their Way Home" (Date: Early 20th Century) This delightful comic postcard captures the humorous side of an age-old tradition - a night out on the town followed by the struggle to make it home. The image features a group of merry men, each in various stages of inebriation, stumbling their way homeward bound. The man in the center, wearing a top hat and a bowler hat under his arm, seems to be leading the way, while the man behind him, wearing a trilby, looks particularly dizzy and ready for bed. The men's wives, who are shown peeking out from their windows, add a touch of amusement to the scene. One woman, with a curious expression on her face, leans out to get a better look at the drunken procession, while another, with a disapproving scowl, shakes her head in disbelief. The scene is set on a quiet, dimly lit street, with the pavement illuminated by the soft glow of a street lamp. The men's disheveled appearance, combined with their unsteady gait, makes for a comical contrast against the orderly, Victorian-era architecture in the background. This charming postcard is a wonderful reminder of the lighter side of human nature and the enduring bond between friends, even in the most inebriated of moments. It is a quintessential example of the humor and wit that characterized British comic postcards of the early 20th century. Artist: Donald McGill (not to be confused with the McGill postcard company)
