EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured lithograph depicts the Clouded Mother of Pearl butterfly, Protogoniomorpha anacardii, with both its upper (dorsal) side and lower (ventral) side displayed. The Clouded Mother of Pearl is a beautiful and intricately patterned insect, native to Central and South America. Its common name derives from the iridescent, mother-of-pearl-like sheen on its wings. The upper side of the butterfly's wings (shown on the left) exhibits a vibrant orange and black pattern, with intricate white veins and black borders. The underside (shown on the right) is a remarkable contrast, with its wings adorned in a camouflaging pattern of brown and white spots, designed to protect the butterfly from predators. This exquisite illustration is from John O. Westwood's new edition of Dru Drury's "Illustrations of Exotic Entomology," published by Bohn in London in 1837. Westwood was a renowned English entomologist and natural historian, who made significant contributions to the study of Lepidoptera (butterflies and moths). The illustration was produced using the lithographic technique, which allowed for intricate detail and vibrant colors. The Clouded Mother of Pearl butterfly is also known by other common names, including the Salamis, Vanessa, and the Anacardic Swallowtail. This insect is a testament to the natural beauty and intricacy of the insect world, and serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving and studying the natural world for future generations.
