EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate engraving depicts the Catocala pacta moth, also known as the French Red Underwing or the Crimson Tiger Moth. The image is based on a natural observation and was created by the skilled hands of Johann Carl Bock, after the original work by Eugenius Johann Christoph Espers in his seminal entomological publication "Die Schmetterlinge in Abbildungen nach der Natur," published in Erlangen in 1786. The Catocala pacta is a beautiful and intriguing Lepidopteran species, belonging to the family Erebidae, and is native to Europe and North America. This moth is easily recognizable by its distinctive wing pattern, which features a large, dark, crimson-red area on the hindwings, bordered by a narrow, lighter-colored band and a broad, dark band. The forewings are dark brown with a series of wavy, white lines. The life cycle of the Catocala pacta is fascinating. As a caterpillar, it is known as the Elocata caterpillar and feeds on various host plants, such as willows and poplars. After several instar stages, the caterpillar forms a pupa, which transforms into the adult moth through the process of metamorphosis. The adult moth emerges at night and is attracted to light sources, making it an intriguing sight for those fortunate enough to encounter it. This stunning engraving is a testament to the beauty and intricacy of the natural world and the dedication of early naturalists and artists to documenting it in meticulous detail. The hand-coloring adds an extra layer of depth and richness to the image, making it a true work of art and an essential addition to any entomology or natural history collection.
