EDITORS COMMENTS
In this copperplate engraving from the 17th century, we find a striking depiction of Byzantine Empress Irene and her son, Emperor Constantine VI. The mother-son duo, dressed in regal attire, exude an air of power and authority. Irene, also known as Irene of Athens or Irene Sarantapechaina, ruled as empress from 797 to 802. She is shown here wearing a diadem adorned with precious stones and a long, flowing robe, symbolizing her imperial status. In her right hand, she holds an orb, a traditional symbol of power and sovereignty, while her left hand rests on a dagger, signifying her military might and ability to protect her realm. Her son, Constantine VI, born in 771, is depicted wearing a crown and a short tunic, signaling his role as emperor. He is shown holding a token coin, possibly a symbol of his authority and rule. The engraving also includes the inscription "IMP. CAES. CONSTANTINUS," further emphasizing his imperial title. The background of the engraving features the busts of Charlemagne, also known as Karolus or Charles the Great, and his contemporary, the Lombard King, Rom. These Western European rulers are depicted in Roman attire, with Charlemagne holding a scepter and the Lombard King holding a spear. This inclusion highlights the interconnectedness of the Byzantine and Western European empires during this period. This enchanting image, created by Abraham Bogaerts for his work "De Roomsche Monarchy," or "The Roman Monarchy," published in Utrecht in 1697, offers a glimpse into the rich history and cultural exchange between the Byzantine and Western European worlds during the late 8th and early 19th centuries.
