EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning chromolithograph depicts a proud Black Hamburgh cock and hen, both adorned with their intricately patterned plumage. The Black Hamburgh, a breed of domestic fowl (Gallus gallus domesticus), was a popular exhibit during the Victorian era, particularly in poultry shows. This particular pair, owned by Rev. W. Serjeantson, achieved remarkable success, winning first prizes at the Birmingham, Edinburgh, Manchester shows in 1871, and the Bristol show in 1872. The image was created by J.W. Ludlow and published by Vincent Brooks Day & Son, based on an illustration from Lewis Wright's The Illustrated Book of Poultry, published by Cassell in London in 1890. The Black Hamburgh was known for its distinctive black feathers, with golden spangles and a polished sheen. The male, or cock, is shown with a proud stance and an alert gaze, while the hen displays her elegant curves and fine plumage. The Victorian era saw a craze for exotic breeds of poultry, with breeding and showing becoming popular pastimes for the affluent. Ornithology and game birds were also subjects of great interest during this time. The image of the Black Hamburgh cock and hen, with their vibrant plumage and regal bearing, reflects the fascination and appreciation for these birds during this era. Despite the exotic allure of the Black Hamburgh, it's important to note that cockfighting, an ancient practice involving the fighting of roosters for sport, was a controversial aspect of poultry keeping during this time. The image does not depict any violence, but the practice was a significant part of the history of poultry breeding during the Victorian era.
