EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured lithograph depicts a charming scene from the comic opera "Les Mousquetaires de la Reine" (The Musketeers of the Queen) by Fromental Halevy, which premiered at the Théâtre Royal de l'Opéra-Comique in Paris in 1846. The image focuses on a bergère, or shepherdess, who gracefully balances a large basket of flowers on her head as she plays her musical instrument, a shepherd's pipe, with an enchanting expression. The bergère is dressed in a traditional costume, complete with a floral headdress, a long, flowing skirt, and a fitted bodice adorned with intricate embroidery. The comic opera "Les Mousquetaires de la Reine" was based on Alexandre Dumas' popular novel "The Three Musketeers" and told the story of the adventures of the musketeers Athos, Porthos, and Aramis, as well as their encounters with the beautiful Constance and the villainous Rochefort. This ballet sequence, featuring the bergère, was likely included as a light-hearted interlude to provide relief from the drama and action of the main storyline. The illustration was created by Alexandre Lacauchie and published in Victor Dollet's "Galerie Dramatique: Costumes des Théâtres de Paris," a collection of lithographs depicting the costumes and scenes from various productions at the Parisian theatres. The handcoloured lithograph adds a vibrant and detailed touch to the image, bringing the bergère and her enchanting scene to life.
