EDITORS COMMENTS
Bearberry, Arctostaphylos uva-ursi, is a low-growing evergreen shrub native to the cooler regions of the Northern Hemisphere. The handcoloured lithograph by Hanhart, after a botanical illustration by David Blair, depicts the plant's small, rounded leaves and clusters of red berries. Bearberry was highly valued in traditional herbal medicine for its diuretic and astringent properties. The plant's leaves were used to make a tea, which was used to treat various ailments including urinary tract infections, kidney stones, and gastrointestinal issues. The illustration is taken from Robert Bentley and Henry Trimen's "Medicinal Plants," published in London in 1880. The work was a comprehensive compendium of medicinal plants, featuring detailed botanical illustrations and descriptions. The authors aimed to provide an accurate record of the plants and their medicinal uses, which were used by apothecaries and herbalists at the time. Bearberry was believed to have various other medicinal properties, including anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects. The plant's leaves were also used topically to treat skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis. The berries were sometimes used to make a dye, which was used to colour textiles and cosmetics. Despite the advances in modern medicine, bearberry continues to be used in traditional medicine, particularly in Europe and North America. The plant's extract is still used to treat urinary tract infections and other conditions. The illustration serves as a reminder of the importance of natural medicines in the past and the ongoing interest in their use today.
