This handcoloured lithograph showcases two distinctive puffin species, the Atlantic Puffin (Fratercula arctica) and the Tufted Puffin (Fratercula cirrhata), from Th. Lejeune's Complete Works of Buffon, published in Brussels in 1837. The Atlantic Puffin, also known as the Common Puffin, is a widely distributed seabird with a black back and wings, and a colorful bill with a red base and a large, colorful, outer ring. In contrast, the Tufted Puffin, also known as the Crested Puffin, sports a black back and wings, but its face is adorned with a distinctive, erect, orange-colored tuft of feathers. Both species are excellent swimmers and divers, capable of diving up to 200 feet deep in search of food for their young. The Atlantic Puffin is native to the North Atlantic Ocean, while the Tufted Puffin is found along the North Pacific Ocean. Although they share some similarities, such as their distinctive black and white plumage and their distinctive beaks, these two species have distinct habitats and behaviors. For instance, Atlantic Puffins typically nest in burrows in the ground, while Tufted Puffins build their nests in crevices or burrows in cliffs.
