EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured copperplate engraving, taken from Friedrich Johann Bertuch's Bilderbuch fur Kinder (Picture Book for Children), published in Weimar in 1795, offers a captivating glimpse into the ancient world of cavalry warfare. At the center stands a Roman general (1), proudly holding the symbol of his authority - a bundle of rods with an axe head, known as fasces. Flanking him are two fasces bearers (2), their faces stern and determined. Behind the general, a line of Roman cavalry (3) readies for battle. Each soldier wears a helmet adorned with a crest, holds a lance and shield, and sits atop a powerful steed. Their armor, though not visible in this image, would have provided them with essential protection against enemy attacks. To the right, Numidian cavalry (4) charge forward, their distinctive helmets and cloaks setting them apart from their Roman counterparts. The Numidians, a people from North Africa, were renowned for their horsemanship and were often allied with the Romans during wars. In the foreground, a rider (5) clad in suit of scale armor rides towards the enemy, his horse's mane flying in the wind. Scale armor, made up of small, overlapping metal plates, was a popular choice for medieval European knights and was also used by some ancient civilizations, including the Persians and the Greeks. To the left, Dacian cavalry (6) approach, their long cloaks billowing behind them. The Dacians, an ancient people inhabiting the region of present-day Romania, were known for their fierce warriors and their skill in archery. Some Dacian cavalrymen are depicted here with bows and arrows, ready to rain arrows upon their enemies. This engraving provides a vivid portrayal of ancient military life, showcasing the various cavalries and their unique characteristics. It is a testament to the rich history and cultural diversity of the ancient world.
