EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored lithograph, taken from John O. Westwood's new edition of Dru Drury's Illustrations of Exotic Entomology, published by Bohn in London in 1837, showcases an intriguing assembly of moths native to Surinam. The first two moths in the illustration are the Amesia sanguiflua, also known as the Red-spotted Tussock Moth or the Milkweed Tiger Moth. These moths are characterized by their vibrant orange and black wings, adorned with distinctive red spots. The larvae of these moths are known to feed on milkweed plants, making them an essential part of the ecosystem. The third moth in the illustration is the Euchaetes egle, commonly referred to as the Milkweed Tiger. This moth boasts striking orange and black wings, with a unique pattern of white spots along the edges. Like the Amesia sanguiflua, the Euchaetes egle is a milkweed specialist, with its larvae feeding on the leaves of milkweed plants. The final moth in the illustration is the Noctua chera, also known as the Surinam Owlet Moth. This moth is depicted with its wings closed, revealing its intricate and camouflaged pattern. The Noctua chera is a nocturnal species, with a wingspan of around 7 centimeters. Its larvae feed on various types of leaves, including those of the passionflower vine. The meticulous hand-coloring and attention to detail in this lithograph provide an exquisite representation of these fascinating moths, showcasing their unique beauty and the intricacies of their natural history. This illustration serves as a testament to the remarkable natural diversity of Surinam and the important role that moths play in the ecosystem.
