1475 1564 Architect Buonarotti Lodovico Michelangelo Painter Sculptor Simoni
EDITORS COMMENTS
Michelangelo Buonarroti, affectionately known as Michelangelo, was an Italian sculptor, painter, architect, and poet, born on March 6, 1475, in Caprese, Tuscany. This image, captured from a print by Mary Evans Prints Online, showcases Michelangelo in his later years, with a thoughtful and introspective expression. Michelangelo's prodigious talent was evident from an early age, and he was apprenticed to the painter Domenico Ghirlandaio at the age of 13. However, it was his work in sculpture that would bring him international acclaim. His most famous sculptures include the Pieta, a moving depiction of the Virgin Mary cradling the dead body of Jesus, and the statue of David, which stands proudly in Florence's Galleria dell'Accademia. Michelangelo's painting career also flourished, with works such as the Sistine Chapel ceiling and The Last Judgment. In architecture, he designed the dome of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome, a feat of engineering and artistry that continues to inspire awe. Michelangelo's poetic talents were less well-known but no less impressive. He wrote sonnets and madrigals, and his poetry was published posthumously. His verses reveal a deep understanding of the human condition and a profound appreciation for the beauty of the natural world. Michelangelo's impact on Western art is immeasurable, and his influence can be seen in the works of artists from the Renaissance to the present day. This print serves as a reminder of the genius and creativity of one of history's most celebrated artists, who passed away on February 18, 1564.
