1770 1807 Madame Marie Sophie Cottin

EDITORS COMMENTS
Marie Sophie Cottin, also known as Madame Cottin, was a prolific French writer of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Born in Paris in 1770, Cottin began her literary career at a young age, publishing her first novel, "Les Deux Amis," in 1792. Over the next several decades, she wrote numerous novels, plays, and essays, often exploring themes of love, morality, and social issues. Cottin's writing was popular in her time and she was well-known in literary circles. She was a contemporary of other notable French writers such as Chateaubriand and Madame de Stael. Her works were published in various prestigious literary journals and she was even invited to join the prestigious Institut de France. Despite her success, Cottin's personal life was marked by tragedy. She was married twice, both marriages ending in widowhood. Her second husband, a wealthy merchant, died in 1803, leaving her with significant financial difficulties. She continued to write, however, and her works continued to be published and well-received. Cottin died in Paris in 1807, leaving behind a significant body of work that continues to be read and studied today. Her novels, which often featured strong female protagonists, were particularly influential in shaping the literary landscape of the time. This portrait of Marie Sophie Cottin, taken in later life, captures the intensity and intelligence of a woman who defied the conventions of her time and left an indelible mark on French literature.
