Embankment Palm Riverside Unilever Keyser

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken in 1913, showcases the grand interior of De Keysers Royal Hotel, a historic London landmark that once stood along the River Thames. The hotel was the brainchild of Sir Polydore de Keyser, a remarkable figure in British history. Born in Dendermonde, near Ghent, Belgium, de Keyser arrived in England as a young man and went on to establish the hotel in 1856. He ran the establishment with great success until his election as Lord Mayor of London in October 1887, making him the first Roman Catholic to hold this esteemed position since the Reformation. The image reveals the opulence and elegance of the hotel's Palm Court, with its ornate columns, intricate mosaic floor, and lush greenery. The room exudes an air of sophistication and tranquility, making it an ideal setting for afternoon tea or social gatherings. The River Thames and Embankment can be seen through the large windows, adding to the allure of the space. Sadly, the De Keysers Royal Hotel did not endure the test of time. It was demolished in 1929 to make way for Unilever House, a commercial building that now occupies the site. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the rich history and charm that once graced the banks of the River Thames.
