EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the majestic Mutsu, a dreadnought battleship of the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) from the Nagato Class. Constructed towards the end of World War I, the Mutsu represented the pinnacle of naval technology and power during that era. Commissioned in 1921, this imperial warship was named after the ancient Japanese province of Mutsu, and was the second of two Nagato-class battleships built for the IJN. The Mutsu was an impressive sight to behold, with its imposing size and imposing gun batteries. Measuring 622 feet in length and displacing over 35,000 tons, the Mutsu was armed with a main battery of twelve 14-inch guns and twelve 6.1-inch guns, making it a formidable force on the water. Its armor belt was 11 inches thick, and its deck armor was 3 inches thick, providing ample protection against enemy fire. This photograph, taken circa 1921, offers a glimpse into Japan's rich naval history. The Mutsu and its sister ship, the Nagato, were the first Japanese battleships to be designed with a true flush deck, which allowed for greater flexibility in the arrangement of the ship's armament and improved its overall seaworthiness. The Mutsu served in the IJN until the end of World War II, and was eventually scrapped in 1948. This image is a testament to the ingenuity and determination of the Imperial Japanese Navy during a time of great global upheaval. It serves as a reminder of Japan's proud maritime heritage and its significant role in shaping the world's naval landscape in the early 20th century.
