EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the five sons of Grand Princess Ksenia of Russia (1875-1960) on board HMS Marlborough during their exile in England in the aftermath of the Russian Revolution. The brothers, from left to right, are Feodor (b. 1898), Dmitri (b. 1901), Nikita (b. 1900), Rostislav (b. 1902), and Vasili (b. 1907). The image was taken between 26 March and 8 April 1919, with the picturesque town of Yalta visible in the background, serving as a stark reminder of the family's former home in the Crimean Peninsula. The Grand Princess and her sons had been living in exile in Crimea since the fall of the Romanov dynasty in 1917. However, following the Bolshevik takeover of the region in late 1919, they were forced to flee once again. The British government, under the leadership of Winston Churchill, granted them asylum in England, and the family was eventually settled in France. The brothers' experiences during this tumultuous period in history varied greatly. Feodor, the eldest, became a noted historian and scholar, while Dmitri pursued a career in the diplomatic corps. Nikita and Rostislav joined the Russian White Army, fighting against the Bolsheviks, and Vasili became a successful businessman. Despite the challenges they faced, the brothers remained close throughout their lives, maintaining a deep connection to their Russian heritage and the memories of their homeland.
