EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, Sir Gordon Richards, the legendary English jockey, is seen in a relaxed moment with his beloved wife, Margaret Winckle, at their bungalow in Marlborough during the 1920s. Richards, who is often hailed as the greatest jockey in the history of flat racing, had just achieved an impressive feat by riding his 100th winner of the season at York Racecourse in 1928. The image captures the joy and contentment on the faces of the newlywed couple, who had kept their marriage a secret until Richards had reached this milestone. Born on May 5, 1904, Richards began his racing career at a young age and went on to become the British flat racing Champion Jockey an unprecedented 26 times. He was the first and only flat jockey to be knighted for his services to horse racing. The 1920s, also known as the Jazz Age or the Roaring Twenties, were an era of prosperity and excitement, and this photograph perfectly encapsulates the spirit of the time. Richards' dapper attire, complete with a bowler hat and cane, and Margaret's elegant dress and pearls, exude an air of sophistication and glamour. The photograph is a testament to the love and support that Margaret provided to her husband throughout his illustrious career. Despite the challenges and hardships they faced, the couple remained deeply devoted to each other, and their bond only grew stronger with time. This image serves as a reminder of the enduring power of love and the indelible impact that Sir Gordon Richards had on the world of horseracing.
