EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a rare moment of camaraderie between two European monarchs, King George V and Kaiser Wilhelm II, in 1912. The image shows George V, then the Duke of York, in an unexpected uniform - that of the German Dragoon Guards. His cousin and German Emperor, Wilhelm II, is also seen in his military attire, that of the Prussian Foot Guards, complete with a Pickelhaube helmet. This unusual meeting took place outside the mess of the Prussian Foot Guards in Berlin, just a few years before the outbreak of World War I. Admiral John Jellicoe, 1st Earl Jellicoe, also features in the photograph, dressed in his British naval uniform. Jellicoe would later become a key figure in the naval battles of the war. The image was published after the start of the war, with the overwritten slogan "Never Again!" reflecting the growing tensions between the two nations. The sight of the royal cousins, dressed in the uniforms of their respective enemies, is a stark reminder of a time when European monarchs and their militaries were interconnected through familial ties and alliances. The photograph offers a glimpse into the complex web of relationships that existed before the Great War, and serves as a poignant reminder of the devastating consequences of conflict between European powers.
