EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait captures the distinguished visage of General Sir Hugh Henry Gough (1833-1909), an Indian-born British Army officer who rose to prominence during the Indian Mutiny of 1857. Born in India, Gough's military career began at a young age, and he quickly proved himself to be a brave and capable soldier. His gallantry during the Indian Mutiny, a period of widespread rebellion against British rule, earned him the highest and most prestigious award for valor in the face of the enemy that can be bestowed upon British and Commonwealth forces: the Victoria Cross. After the mutiny was quelled, Gough's military accomplishments did not go unnoticed. He was appointed Keeper of the Jewel House at the Tower of London, a position of great honor and responsibility.
