EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcolored illustration, created by E. Lechevallier-Chevignard and lithographed by A. Didier, L. Flameng, and F. Laguillermie, transports us back to the opulent court of Henry III of France (r. 1574-1589). The French monarch, known for his love of the arts and elegant court, is surrounded by an array of nobles, all dressed in the height of 16th-century fashion. The noblemen don ornate doublets, often featuring intricate designs and rich fabrics. Their ruffs, which were worn around the neck and collarbones, are adorned with lace or other decorative elements. Below their doublets, they wear fitted stockings held up by garters. The codpiece, a distinctive feature of male attire during this period, is prominently displayed. The noblewomen, on the other hand, wear voluminous gowns that fall in soft folds around their bodies. Their dresses, often made of luxurious fabrics like velvet or satin, are adorned with intricate embroidery and lace. The women's collars are high and often feature elaborate designs, while they carry fans to keep cool in the warm courtly atmosphere. This illustration, taken from Georges Duplessis' "Costumes historiques des XVIe, XVIIe et XVIIIe siecles" (Historical costumes of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries), published in Paris in 1867, provides a fascinating glimpse into the world of the French nobility during the reign of Henry III. The meticulous attention to detail and the vibrant colors of the handcoloring bring the image to life, allowing us to imagine the grandeur and elegance of the French court in the late 16th century.
