EDITORS COMMENTS
Francois Pierre Gillet: A Prominent Figure in 18th Century French Jurisprudence This portrait depicts Francois Pierre Gillet (1648-1720), a renowned French jurist who made significant contributions to the development of French law during the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Gillet's distinguished career spanned over six decades, during which he served as a magistrate, a professor of law, and a member of the Parlement of Paris. Born in Paris, Gillet began his legal studies at the Sorbonne University, where he quickly gained a reputation for his exceptional intellect and dedication to the law. He went on to serve as a magistrate in various courts throughout France, eventually rising to the position of president of the Chambre des Enquêtes in the Parlement of Paris. Gillet's greatest achievement, however, was his work as a professor of law at the University of Paris. He was appointed to this position in 1689 and went on to author several influential texts on Roman law, including "Institutions Romaines," which became a standard reference work for French jurists. This portrait, taken towards the end of Gillet's life, captures the wise and thoughtful expression of a man who dedicated his life to the pursuit of justice and the advancement of the law. The intricately styled wig, a symbol of his status and learning, adds to the sense of elegance and refinement that characterized the French legal profession during this period. Francois Pierre Gillet's legacy as a jurist and scholar continues to be felt in France and beyond, making this portrait an invaluable historical record of a man who played a pivotal role in shaping the legal landscape of his time.
