1790 Betrayed Confederate Conspiracy Destroy Greve Hanged Marquis Rescue Revolution

EDITORS COMMENTS
This haunting image captures the final moments of Thomas de Mahy, marquis de Favras, a nobleman who became a key figure in the early days of the French Revolution. In 1790, as the monarchy teetered on the brink of collapse, Favras conspired to rescue King Louis XVI and restore order to the chaos that was engulfing the country. He rallied a group of like-minded aristocrats and together they hatched a plan to seize control of the Tuileries Palace, where the king was being held. But the conspiracy was betrayed, and Favras was arrested along with his confederates. Despite his noble intentions, Favras was seen as a threat to the new revolutionary regime and was put on trial. On 19 February 1790, he was found guilty of treason and sentenced to death. The print depicts Favras being led to the scaffold at the Place de Greve in Paris, where he was hanged in front of a jeering crowd. The expression on his face is one of resignation and acceptance, as if he knew that his fate was sealed. The events of 19 February 1790 marked a turning point in the French Revolution, as the monarchy's last desperate attempt to regain power was crushed and the revolutionaries solidified their hold on the country. This image serves as a poignant reminder of the tumultuous events that shaped the course of French history. It is a powerful reminder of the human cost of revolution and the complex motivations that drive people to act in the name of their beliefs, even if those actions ultimately lead to their own downfall.
