EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, Empress Maria Feodorovna, nee Princess Dagmar of Denmark, gracefully poses in a stunning maroon velvet gown. The image, taken around 1895, captures the elegance and sophistication of the Empress during her time as the wife of Tsar Alexander III and the mother of Tsar Nicholas II. The dress, a masterpiece of nineteenth-century haute couture, was created by the renowned French designer Charles Frederick Worth of Paris. The maroon velvet fabric is intricately embroidered with a carnation pattern, delicately embellished in shades of gold. The gown's elegant design and exquisite craftsmanship reflect the opulence and grandeur of the Russian Imperial Court. The dress, which has survived to this day, was showcased in an exhibition of nineteenth-century costume at the State Hermitage Museum in 1993. The preservation of this historic garment offers a unique glimpse into the fashion and history of the Russian Imperial Court during the late nineteenth century. Empress Maria Feodorovna's connection to the Danish and British royal families further adds to the intrigue surrounding this photograph. She was the sister of Queen Alexandra of the United Kingdom and the aunt of King George V. Her marriage to Tsar Alexander III united the Danish and Russian royal houses, making her an influential figure in European royal history. This photograph not only showcases the beauty and elegance of Empress Maria Feodorovna but also offers a glimpse into the opulent world of the Russian Imperial Court during the late nineteenth century. The survival of her Worth-designed gown serves as a testament to the enduring legacy of this remarkable woman and the fashion of her time.
