EDITORS COMMENTS
Claude de Lorraine, First Duke of Guise (1496-1550): A Regal Portrait at the Age of Thirty This lithograph, signed by J. Jacquet and hand-colored by E. Lechevallier-Chevignard, offers a glimpse into the opulent world of the French nobility during the 16th century. The subject of the portrait is none other than Claude de Lorraine, the first Duke of Guise, who ruled from 1520 until his untimely death in 1550. At the age of thirty, Claude de Lorraine is depicted in this portrait with an air of authority and sophistication. He wears a brown cape, which is draped elegantly over his shoulders, revealing a slashed jerkin and hose beneath. The intricate design of the hose is accentuated by the contrasting color of his stockings. The Duke completes his regal attire with a sword at his side, its scabbard adorned with intricate gold decorations. This portrait is an exquisite example of the fashion and artistry of the 16th century. It was published as part of Georges Duplessis' "Costumes historiques des XVIe, XVIIe et XVIIIe siecles" (Historical costumes of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries), which was released in Paris in 1867. The lithograph was produced by a team of skilled artists and craftsmen, including J. Jacquet, E. Lechevallier-Chevignard, A. Didier, L. Flameng, and F. Laguillermie. Their collective efforts have resulted in a stunning representation of the Duke of Guise, which continues to captivate and inspire viewers to this day.
