EDITORS COMMENTS
(Royal Calendar Indicating the Sun's Course), a 1706 print by an unknown artist, offers a striking visual representation of the tumultuous reign of King Louis XIV of France. The image depicts Louis XIV seated on a box with a fan-shaped back, positioned at the center of a radiant sun. The numerous rays of the sun, instead of conveying warmth and light, document the indignities and scandals that marred the monarch's rule between 1667 and 1705. The first ray, labeled "Adultere avec Madame de Montespan en 1670" (Adultery with Madame de Montespan in 1670), signifies the king's infamous affair with the favored courtier, which produced several illegitimate children. The second ray, "Legitimer des enfans batards, le Pr. du Maine, son fils et de Madame de Montespan en 1673" (Legitimizing the Bastard Children, the Prince of Maine, his son, and Madame de Montespan in 1673), symbolizes the king's decision to legitimize these offspring. Additional rays document other scandals, including incest with the wife of the Dauphin in 1680 and the corruption of Prince Louis de Bade in 1705. The sun's rays also indicate instances of sacrilege in Germany and Italy during the same year. At the bottom of the print, the eclipse of May 12, 1706, is noted, adding an ominous tone to the already troubled reign. This intricately detailed print serves as a poignant reminder of the complexities and controversies that marked the life and rule of one of France's most influential monarchs.
