EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning Attic black-figure kylix, dating back to the archaic period of Greek art, depicts a pivotal moment in the epic Trojan War. At the center of the composition, the goddess Athena, the Greek deity of wisdom and war, is shown intervening between Hector, the noble Trojan prince, and Achilles, the legendary Greek hero. The scene is filled with historical significance, as it represents the climax of the duel between the two formidable warriors, which took place during the tenth year of the war. Athena, who was favoring the Greeks, sought to protect Achilles from Hector's deadly spear, while Hector, aided by the god Apollo, was determined to avenge the death of his brother Patroclus, who had been killed in battle wearing Achilles' armor. The intricate details of the black-figure technique are evident in this masterpiece, with the figures of Athena, Hector, and Achilles each displayed with remarkable clarity and definition. Athena's helmeted head, adorned with an aegis and a crest of an owl, is visible, as she reaches out to grasp Hector's spear, halting his attack on Achilles. Hector, depicted with a crested helmet and a shield emblazoned with a Gorgon's head, is shown with determined resolve, while Achilles, wearing a lion-skin headdress and wielding a spear, looks on with a fierce expression. This exquisite kylix, now housed in the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, offers a captivating glimpse into the rich history and mythology of ancient Greece, allowing us to explore the intricacies of its art and the epic tales that shaped its cultural identity.
