This historic print depicts the momentous event of Arnulf's crowning as King of Germany at the Diet of Tribur near Darmstadt in the year 887. The Diet, an assembly of noblemen and ecclesiastics, gathered to address the political instability that had arisen following the death of Charles the Bald, King of the West Franks. Charles le Gros, the son of Louis the German, had been elected King of East Francia, but his rule was contested by Arnulf, the Duke of Carinthia. Arnulf, a powerful and ambitious leader, had gained the support of many of the German nobles and ecclesiastics, who saw him as a stronger and more capable ruler than Charles le Gros. The Diet, held at Tribur, was a pivotal moment in German history. Arnulf, dressed in regal attire and holding a scepter and orb, is shown being crowned by Archbishop Hatto of Mainz. The other dignitaries in attendance look on approvingly, including Duke Bardo of Swabia and Duke Conrad of Franconia. The successful deposition of Charles le Gros and the election of Arnulf as King of Germany marked the end of the Carolingian dynasty and the beginning of the Ottonian dynasty.
