EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a mesmerizing pendant design featuring a powerful male deity shield flanked by two reclining men. Created in 1581, this engraving is the second state of its kind and can be found in the renowned New Hollstein collection. The sheet measures approximately 6 3/4 x 4 13/16 inches (172 x 122 cm) and was skillfully crafted by Jan Collaert I, a talented Netherlandish artist from Antwerp. In this vertical panel, the central figure holds a shield with great authority while standing beside an orb. Surrounding him are intricate strapwork ornaments and grotesque elements that add to the overall allure of the piece. On either side of the central figure, two nude male figures recline facing outwards, their attention drawn towards dragon-headed creatures. The composition exudes strength and mystique as it captures both divine power and human vulnerability. This exceptional artwork transports viewers to another time, allowing them to marvel at the artistic genius behind its creation.
