Broad Street UXC01_01_01_0068_14
"Broad Street, Ludlow, Shropshire, 1950s. A view looking along the east row of shops on Broad Street from the junction with the east end of the High Street, showing Bodenham's shop in the foreground.
The image has been taken on the junction of three roads in the centre of Ludlow; Kings Street, Hight Street and Broad Street, and looks south down Braod street, showing the row of shops on the eastern side. The drapery shop Bodenham's is in the foreground and signed as "Frederick J. Bodenham". The shop is still under the name of Bodenham's. Other shops such as groceries and cafes are in the image, and there are contemporary cars and delivery vans parked along the street, and a couple of figures walking on the pavement. Many of the buildings in the image, including Bodenham's, are timber-framed and two to three storeys. On the far left of the image is the "No Entry" sign that marks the western end of Kings Street."

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Broad Street in Ludlow, Shropshire during the 1950s. The image provides a nostalgic glimpse into a bygone era, showcasing the bustling row of shops on the eastern side of Broad Street. In the foreground stands Bodenham's shop, proudly displaying its name as "Frederick J. Bodenham". Remarkably, this iconic drapery shop still bears its original name to this day. The photograph was taken at the junction where three roads intersect - Kings Street, High Street, and Broad Street - forming a vibrant hub in the heart of Ludlow. Looking south down Broad Street, one can admire the timber-framed buildings that line both sides of the street. These two to three-storey structures exude charm and character. As we delve deeper into this snapshot from history, we notice various other shops including groceries and cafes dotting the scene. Alongside them are parked contemporary cars and delivery vans that add an extra layer of authenticity to this time capsule. A few figures leisurely stroll along the pavement, adding life and movement to an otherwise frozen moment in time. On closer inspection towards the left-hand side of our frame is a conspicuous "No Entry" sign marking Kings Street's western end. Through Ursula Clark's lens for Historic England, we are transported back to an era where simplicity reigned supreme on Broad Street in Ludlow - a cherished memory preserved forever within this remarkable photo print.
