Minstrel UXC01_01_01_0364_14
Minster Church Of St John, Minster Yard, Beverley, East Riding Of Yorkshire. Detail of a sculpted hoodmould stop on the north aisle wall of St John's Minster Church, showing a minstrel, possibly female, holding an instrument in their left hand and playing with their right. The sculpted minstrel holds an instrument with two levels in their left hand, and plays with their right hand. Due to the way they are playing the instrument, it is either a small perscussion instrument, or a string instrument which is plucked. The lower section of the instrument and right hand have been damaged. The player wears a wimple and long robes, and the left leg is crossed over the right knee. The sculpture is situated on the wall of the north aisle, in the third bay from the right of the north door

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a remarkable detail of the Minster Church of St John in Beverley, East Riding Of Yorkshire. The focus is on a sculpted hoodmould stop located on the north aisle wall of the church. The intricately carved figure depicts what appears to be a minstrel, possibly female, engaged in playing an instrument. The minstrel holds a unique instrument with two levels in their left hand while skillfully playing it with their right hand. Although some damage has occurred to the lower section of the instrument and right hand, its original form can still be appreciated. It is intriguing to speculate whether this instrument was a small percussion or plucked string instrument due to the player's technique. Adorned in elegant long robes and wearing a wimple, this sculpture exudes medieval charm and musical talent. The minstrel's left leg is crossed over their right knee, adding an element of gracefulness to their posture. Situated on the wall of the north aisle, specifically in the third bay from the right of the north door, this sculpture serves as both an artistic masterpiece and a testament to music's significance within religious spaces. Ursula Clark's expert photography allows us to appreciate every intricate detail captured within this image.
