This aerial view captures the grandeur of Coryton Oil Refinery during its construction in Thurrock, Essex. The photo print, taken from the north-west, showcases the impressive scale and intricate engineering of this industrial marvel. Coryton Oil Refinery was a symbol of progress and innovation when it was ceremonially opened in May 1954 by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother. Operated initially by Vacuum Oil Company (a unit of Mobil), it later became a joint venture between BP and Mobil in 1996. Ownership eventually transferred to BP in 2000 before being acquired by Petroplus Holdings in 2007. The refinery played a vital role in producing essential petroleum products such as petrol, diesel, aviation fuels, liquefied petroleum gas, fuel oils, and bitumen. Sadly, despite its rich history and contributions to society over several decades, Coryton Oil Refinery ceased operations in 2012.
